On the Mountain

Community Strengthens Our Faith

What a profound journey we embarked on together this past Sunday as we delved into the transformative narrative of Jesus' transfiguration on the mountaintop. As we reflected on the Gospel of Mark, chapter nine, verses two through nine, I was struck by the roles Moses and Elijah may have played in this sacred encounter.

Imagine with me for a moment the scene atop that lofty peak. Jesus, accompanied by Peter, James, and John, is enveloped in dazzling light, his divine nature shining forth for all to see. But alongside him stand Moses and Elijah, two towering figures from Israel's past, offering their support and encouragement to the Savior.

Moses, the great liberator and lawgiver, may have whispered words of strength to Jesus, reminding him of the trials he faced in leading the Israelites out of bondage. "You can do this, Jesus," Moses may have said, "just as I faced Pharaoh and led my people to freedom, so too will you lead humanity to salvation."

And Elijah, the fiery prophet who fearlessly confronted injustice, may have offered Jesus words of solidarity and resolve. "Be prepared, Jesus," Elijah may have intoned, "just as I faced persecution for speaking truth to power, so too will you face opposition on your journey to the cross."

In envisioning Moses and Elijah in this supportive role, we are reminded of the importance of spiritual mentors and guides in our own lives. Just as Jesus sought strength and encouragement from these faithful servants of God, so too can we find inspiration and guidance from those who walk alongside us on our own faith journeys.

As we continue our spiritual pilgrimage together, may we be open to the wisdom and support of those who have gone before us, just as Jesus was open to the presence of Moses and Elijah on the mountaintop. Let us draw strength from their examples of faithfulness and courage, knowing that we are never alone in our journey with Christ.
