Answering the Shepherd's Call: Nourishing, Nurturing, and Searching

  • John 21:15-19

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” A second time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.

Picture the scene: a seaside breakfast, a moment of tender restoration between Jesus and Peter. But this interaction transcends mere reconciliation; it's a commissioning, a divine charge to care for God's sheep. Who make up this flock that Jesus expects Peter to care for? Based on language used throughout the Gospels, we can assume that Jesus is talking about a couple of different groups:

The Sheep in the Fold:

These are our cherished church family members, our fellow travelers on the journey of faith. Just as Jesus entrusted Peter with the disciples, we're called to nurture, support, and intercede for one another. Our congregation exemplifies this beautifully through heartfelt acts of prayer, communal meals, and communion delivery. It's a testament to the familial bond we share and the importance of caring for one another.

The Tender Lambs

These represent the vulnerable souls among us—the marginalized, the hurting, the hungry. We're challenged to extend compassion beyond our church walls, reaching out with tangible expressions of love and solidarity. Whether it's stocking the blessing box with groceries or engaging in local outreach initiatives, there's no shortage of opportunities to embody Christ's love to those in need.

The Lost Sheep

These are the ones who have yet to encounter Jesus, who wander without the knowledge of His grace. Like the shepherd in Jesus' parable, we're called to actively seek out the lost, sharing the transformative message of God's love wherever we go. Our community is brimming with mission opportunities, from neighborhood engagement to global outreach efforts. Let's seize every chance to illuminate the path to salvation for those who are still searching.

At the heart of it all lies a simple yet profound question: "Do you love me?" Just as Jesus posed this query to Peter, He poses it to each of us today. Our service flows from our love for Christ—a love that compels us to nourish, nurture, and seek His precious sheep.

Now, let's take action:

  • Join a Ministry: Explore opportunities within our church to serve and support one another. Whether it's volunteering with our meal delivery program or joining a community outreach initiative, your involvement makes a difference.
  • Engage Locally: Look for ways to extend Christ's love beyond our church walls. Consider participating in neighborhood clean-up projects, volunteering at local shelters, or supporting community events.
  • Share the Gospel: Be intentional about sharing the good news of Jesus with those around you. Whether it's through personal conversations, inviting friends to church, or supporting global mission efforts, let's actively participate in spreading God's love to the ends of the earth.

As we reflect on these timeless truths, may we respond with unwavering devotion, embracing the sacred privilege of shepherding God's flock. Let's answer the Shepherd's call with joy, purpose, and an abundance of love.
