Freedom and Transformation Through the Holy Spirit

Going Eight Feet

In this passage, we find the disciples, including Peter, returning to what they knew best—fishing. After the intense events they had experienced with Jesus, perhaps they sought solace and familiarity in their old profession. And who could blame them? In times of uncertainty, we often cling to what feels safe and comfortable.

But despite their efforts, they catch nothing. Hours pass, and frustration mounts. They've tried everything, yet the nets remain empty. Have you ever been in a similar situation? Striving, toiling, only to come up empty-handed? It's a feeling of defeat that can weigh heavily on the soul.

Then, just as day breaks, Jesus appears on the shore. At first, the disciples don't recognize him. But when he instructs them to cast their nets on the right side of the boat, they obey. Here's where the story takes an unexpected turn.

Jesus doesn't tell them to row to shore or try a different technique. Instead, he asks them to go to the other side of the boat (scholars think that the boats used at this time in the area would have been about eight feet wide). It seems like such a small adjustment, insignificant even. But sometimes, it's these seemingly small acts of obedience that lead to extraordinary outcomes.

So they cast their nets again, trusting in Jesus' words. And what happens next is nothing short of miraculous. The nets are filled to bursting with fish—153 of them, to be exact. It's a catch so abundant that they struggle to haul it in.

What can we learn from this story? First, there's power in admitting our failures and turning to Jesus for direction. Like Peter and the other disciples, we may find ourselves at a loss, wondering what to do next. But it's in those moments of surrender that we open ourselves to God's guidance and provision.

Second, obedience, even in the smallest details, can lead to blessings beyond our imagination. Jesus didn't ask the disciples to perform a grand gesture or make a drastic change. He simply asked them to trust him and follow his instructions. And in doing so, they experienced abundance.

Finally, we're reminded that Jesus invites us into intimate fellowship with him, regardless of our past mistakes. Just as he shared a meal with Peter and the disciples, he extends that same invitation to each of us. It's a reminder of his unconditional love and forgiveness, a love that transcends our failures and shortcomings.

So as we go about our week, let's be willing to go "eight feet" in faith toward the new things that God has for us. Let's trust in his guidance, obey his commands, and anticipate the abundant blessings he has in store.

Thomas's journey from doubt to belief offers valuable insights for all of us who grapple with questions about faith. Here are a few reflections drawn from his story:

Authentic Doubt: Doubt is a natural aspect of faith. It's okay to have questions and uncertainties. In fact, doubt can be a sign of a faith that is alive and engaged, rather than stagnant. Thomas's honest admission of doubt opened the door for Jesus to meet him in his uncertainty, offering him the proof he needed to believe. Likewise, we can bring our doubts to God, trusting that He will meet us where we are and provide what we need to strengthen our faith.
Community and Support: Thomas's absence from the community of faith left him vulnerable to doubt. When we isolate ourselves from other Christians, we miss out on the encouragement, support, and collective wisdom that community provides. Being part of a faith community allows us to wrestle with our doubts in a safe space, surrounded by others who can offer guidance, prayer, and solidarity on our journey.
Encountering Jesus: Despite Thomas's initial doubts, Jesus graciously appeared to him, offering both proof and peace. Don't Lose Sight

Last Sunday's reflection on the Gospel of Luke brought us to the story of two disciples journeying to Emmaus, shrouded in the disappointment of recent events. Are we actively seeking to grow closer to Christ, or are we content with superficial engagement? By immersing ourselves in the teachings of Jesus and communing with Him through prayer and fellowship, we position ourselves to recognize His presence in every aspect of our lives.

Finding Faith in an Empty Tomb

During last week's Easter celebrations, we were transported back to the somber morning of the resurrection as recounted in the Gospel of John, chapter 20. Mary Magdalene, a woman healed of seven demons by Jesus, does not recognize him outside of the tomb. What does this Mary have to teach us about faith?

Seeking Jesus Amidst Doubt and Grief

Mary Magdalene's journey to the tomb on that dark morning was marked by uncertainty and sorrow. Faced with the reality of Jesus' crucifixion and the empty tomb before her, Mary grappled with doubt and fear. Her hesitation to enter the tomb reflects the doubts that can cloud our own hearts when confronted with life's trials and uncertainties. Like Mary, many of us may find ourselves questioning God's presence in the midst of suffering or grappling with doubts about the reality of Jesus' resurrection; she is reminder to us that it's okay to question and have doubts. Moreover, Mary's eventual encounter with the risen Jesus teaches us that even in our moments of doubt, Jesus meets us where we are and calls us by name, offering us the assurance of His presence and love.

The Importance of Seeking

Peter and the other disciple's swift response to Mary's report of the empty tomb serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of seeking Jesus diligently. Despite their lack of full understanding of the scriptures, they were compelled to seek out the truth for themselves. Their eagerness to investigate the empty tomb challenges us to actively seek Jesus in our own lives, even when faced with uncertainty or skepticism. So many people in our world are searching for meaning, purpose, or a deeper connection with God. A Different Calendar, A Different Kingdom

Last weekend, we celebrated Christ the King Sunday! As we navigate the transition from fall to winter, surrounded by pumpkins, wreaths, and the anticipation of Christmas, it's essential to remember that, as Christians, we follow a different calendar—the Christian calendar. Last Sunday marked the end of the Christian year, culminating in Christ the King Sunday, and tomorrow we will embark on a new Christian year with the arrival of Advent.

In last week's sermon, we delved into Ephesians 1:15-23 , where the apostle Paul, writing from prison, encourages the Ephesian church amidst division and persecution. He begins with a prayer of thanksgiving, asking for a spirit of wisdom and revelation for the believers. The key themes are wisdom, revelation, and hope—the ingredients for comprehending the immeasurable greatness of God's power. Paul emphasizes the unlimited power of God, a power demonstrated in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This power, unseen yet at work in the world, surpasses our human limitations. It's a power that accomplished far more than we could ask or imagine, as stated in Ephesians 3 .

Christ the King Sunday directs our focus to Jesus as the ultimate ruler, seated at the right hand of God. This imagery echoes Psalm 47 , emphasizing God's kingship over all the earth. The resurrection of Jesus symbolizes God's victory over evil and establishes Jesus as the ruler above all earthly powers. Unlike the world's perception of power, Jesus, our King, demonstrated a different kind of authority—one rooted in humility, sacrifice, service, and compassion. The Gospel accounts, especially the washing of the disciples' feet, exemplify this unique approach to leadership. Jesus came to establish a kingdom marked by love, forgiveness, and inclusion. This kingdom operates by different principles, not seeking political or economic power. Instead, it invites believers to live out humility, compassion, and service, following the example set by our King.

When you think of Heaven, what comes to mind? For some, the idea of floating somewhere up in the clouds after you die is the main image. The Book of Revelation gives us some interesting things to consider when we think about Heaven:

Heavenly Unity and Diversity:

In Revelation 7:9-17, Heaven is a place where people from every nation, tribe, and language come together in worship. The image of believers waving branches together signifies unity, transcending cultural, ethnic, and linguistic differences. This vision challenges the earthly divisions that often lead to conflict and suffering, highlighting the hope that in heaven, all will be united in worship.

Healing and Wholeness in Heaven:

Heaven is a place free from suffering and pain. The mention of hunger and thirst being no more, the absence of scorching heat, and the image of white robes symbolizing purity and healing convey the complete restoration of individuals in heaven. This concept provides comfort and solace to those currently experiencing suffering on earth, emphasizing the transformative power of the Lamb of God.

Living a Transformed Life Today:

Learning from Martha Berry

Martha Berry was a lady with a vision to help poor children. She wanted to start a school, but she had no books, she had no building and she had no money. But what she did have was a dream. She went to Henry Ford to ask for a donation and Mr. Ford reached into his pocket and gave Martha a dime. Now, most people would be insulted by that for he was a multimillionaire and all he could offer was a dime. But Martha took that dime and bought a pack of seeds and planted a garden. She raised a crop, sold it and bought more seeds. And after three or four harvests she had enough money to purchase an old building. She returned to Mr. Ford and said look what your dime has done. The man was so impressed that he donated a million dollars to the Berry School. So the question lies before us this morning. What will we do with what God has given us?
