The mission of the Sports and Recreation Ministries is to create opportunities to develop friendships, strengthen one another in life and faith and to take care of our bodies as they are temples of the Living God! This we will accomplish through our favorite sports, hobbies, exercises and other forms of fun recreation. The Sports and Recreation Ministry serves to walk with and support all who are curious, excited, unsure, worried or determined about their health.   Grace UMC works toward making this a family affair. It is with this in mind that we hope everyone in your family and our surrounding community  will find an opportunity to participate and fellowship here with one another. It is our purpose to provide programs for all walks of life, from our excited curious kindergarteners to our wise silver haired friends. Together we will make a better community, starting with ourselves.

Any program conducted by the GUMC Sports and Recreation Ministry should pursue these goals in a non-threatening, wholesome, relational environment that promotes and encourages spiritual growth and physical fitness. This Ministry is in need of more volunteers who are dedicated to helping fitness thrive in their environment around them! We are excited for all the opportunities that are on the way!

Youth Basketball

Youth Basketball is held in the late fall and winter with teams made up of Mid-High Boys and Girls, and Senior High Boys and Girls. In February these teams participate in the Annual UMC State Basketball Championship in which Grace Senior High Boys earned the 2016 State Champions. Our Senior Girls won the ACAA League Champions title.

Thurmond Lake Recreational Facility

Recreation and play forms an important part of ministering to the total person. The very word itself means to “RE-CREATE” that with which God has blessed us. Keeping that in mind, Grace Church has twenty-one acres of land on Thurmond Lake available for our members’ use. The facilities include a lodge with kitchen, a bathhouse, areas for tent camping, a swimming area with beach, picnic areas, and a boat landing. For a nominal fee, keys are available from the church office. Please call the church office for more information. For a lakesite pamphlet, click here.

Adult Softball

Our men and women participate in a church league that starts play in July and August. This league is currently run the NAPRD with games being held on Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays. A championship tournament is held at the end of the season.
